re-using strings, stringing an acoustic

Sign in to disble this ad
there are some strings i want to try, but i'm not sure which of my basses they'd suit.

The bass in need of strings is electric, i want to try some flats, but if i don't like how they sound on that one i'd swap the over to my acoustic. Will they end up too short to string an acoustic if i put them on the electric first?

they're both 34", and the heads are a comparable shape, but bridge very different.

I had a bit of a hard time swapping some strings last night though, both basses were 34" but head shape meant the donor bass was smaller and i didn't get enough length to wrap securely.

Finding a good string/bassguitar match soundwise, is allways an eureka moment for me. Ofcourse I select the string and bass suspecting a good match, but it still is a matter of try and error.

So I re-string strings quite often on another bass. To do this I leave the strings as long as possible and try to avoid making sharp curves with the string (If a string is severely bend one way, never counterbend it the other way, cause then it will surely snap). Even by taking this care, I sometimes end up with strings that don't fit or even sometimes broken ones. I just take it as the downside off the experiment.

The good side is the reward of an old bass that plays like a newly achieved one. (cheaper and less space needed, I already own 7

I think we should start a thread where every 'string changer' can put his best bass/string combinations and discribe how they sound.

for acoustic I tried tons.. the bronze did not sound like a bass.. flats were overly lumpy.. tapes seemed to work best.

yeah i don't get why they string them with the bronze, it makes it sound like a guitar gone wrong. Then again though, i tried bronze on two cheap and nasty acoustics, and nickle on a rather better made one (the one i bought) so not a controlled experiment.

don't strings on an acoustic kink near the bridge though? can you then put them on an electric with a straight bridge? or would the acoustic have to be the last to try them if i get a new set of strings?
