Recently defretted acoustic...what strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've recently defretted my acoustic bass (Agile, the only one you can get off Rondo, very cheap, yet suprisingly good) and I have the old stock strings it came with just so my neck doesn't move around, but I was wondering what strings would do the best job? If this helps at all, I put about 2 coats of polyurethane to finish the deed. Came out very well. I'm just wondering if anyone has defretted their acoustic, or uses fretless acoustics, and what strings work the best for such a thing?

I did the same thing on my electro-acoustic bass (defretted with 2 or 3 coats of polyurethane), and i tested some of the old strings i have kept, all roundwound strings.

I hated the strings that came with the bass, new (bronze alloy that made my bass sound almost like a guitar).

I chose to install flatwound strings, as my acoustic fretless sounds almost like a double bass, and i hesitated between Addario Chromes, TI Jazz, but i preferred to buy some Fender flat as they were the cheapest, here, in Europe.

And i can say that i love the feel and the sound i have with flats on my fretless acoustic bass.

Hopes this help.

I recently ( 1 month) bought a defretted Takamine EG512CG. I did not like the sound of flats on it. Tried Daddario chrome 1/2 rounds, and roudwound, and it still was not satisfactory to me. Then this Bass really came to life for me with these strings: La Bella brass wound on nylon. A local store holds a custom set with gauges very similiar the the La Bella ABN60.

Of course the tension is much lower with nylon strings, so it took some ajustment of the neck and the action, but I cannot imagine going back to steel core strings on this bass.

With the nylon strings I have a beautiful acoustic sound even when plugged in. there is a resonance and a warmth that was simply not there with the other strings.
