recomand me some taper/exposed

Sign in to disble this ad
here is the point:
i'm a long time DR Hi Beam fan, but for my new fretless bass (Noguera YC 6), i need taperwound or exposed core strings, in order to work properly with the bridge design and the piezzo...

i was thinking about getting the same brand of strings for my fretted YC 6 too, so, would labella (HRS for the fretted, Supersteps for the fretless) be a nice choice ? how do they sound compared to DR ?

thx

I bought a set of Rotosound Piano String Designs a couple months ago, hoping they'd arrive in time for a gig. They didn't. About to put them on my bass after they did arrive, I decided to wait, hoping that I'd be getting a new bass soon. I now have that new bass. I'd like to get it set up properly, though (I'm getting some unwanted fret buzz), so as soon as I have the money I'll be getting that done and getting it strung with the new strings. The moral of my story? I can't offer you any help at the moment... But will gladly let you know what I think of them once I get 'em on.

I'm a hi-beam nut too, here's my take on every tapered set I've tried:

LaBella Hard Rockin steels are great strings, but sound pretty different from DRs and only the E and B are tapered. It sounds like you need a full tapered set right? HRS are fuller, fatter, and growlier than hi-beams, and less punchy and burpy.

The DR longnecks would be a good choice. Like a lo-rider with a taper core. I've only tried the low B of the set, but it felt and sounded a lot like a hi beam low B.

Next you could look at Dean Markley SR2000s and LaBella Super Steps, which to me are quite simmilar to one another. Ultra bright, ultra high impact strings. These are both full exposed core.

Then there are LaBella slappers, all tapered other than the G, and a nickel finish. These are a very warm sounding set of strings, I liked them a lot but wouldn't use them for everything. Very smooth and supple.

I didn't care for Smith tapercores on my basses and can't reccomend them.

thx for the reply !
i think 'ill try HRS on my fretted and SS on my fretless

i've read only bad reviews about the Long Neck : the too long tapered part produce a nasty overtone...

damn, i was founding the Hi Beam fulls and punchy... so the HRS would be full and growly... seems nice !

HRS is a great string set. Right now I've got a bass strung with 4 hi beams and an HRS B ... its pretty sweet.
