Recomend a 5 st set for my new band....

Sign in to disble this ad
I got hired in a new band and the TJIF flats on my 5 string P bass arn't up to the new pick friendly punk style,
so I'm gonna take 'em off and try some rounds.
My question to you my dear "string" thread browser is this, Recomend me some rounds that fit these criteria:

#1 I want Nickle Round Wounds

#2 I want a tapered B string

#3 I don't really want to spend more than, say ... $37
bucksUSD

#4 I don't want a Heavy Gauge set

To give you an idea of tone I've had to learn alot of quick running punk lines ala' Rancid and then switch to a Reggae type thang, then go into hard rock. All in the same set. I only own the 5 string P bass so I don't know if that helps.

Any opinions are appreciated, just sittin around till my acoustic gig at 7:00, Thanx TB'ers!

Well I went with DR Sunbeams they didn't have a 5 st set @ GC so I went with a 4 set and added a Cleartone B. initial impression is good. flats are great but the rounds just have more tone. and the P likes 'em too!

My suggestion? Go to D'Addario XL NICKEL ROUND WOUND Build your own Custom String Set! and build your own custom set. I put together a balanced set of D'Addario for 5 string with a .130 tapered B and it was around $21 before shipping. Not my favorite strings, but you can't beat them for the price. And they make their tension measurements readily available so they have that over almost everybody.

He also offers DR and Ken Smith in the 'make your own set', but they will be out of your price range.

edit: sorry, didn't see that you already got a set. File this info away for future use

FYI... The links to the actual sets are different depending on if you are setup as a Forum VIP or a standard account. This is necessary for the pricing structure difference.

If the link does not work for you, visit the below link and the different set options will appear.

I'd suggest a set with at least a B, and definitely an E, A, D, & G.

Rotosound and warwick make sets that fit that criteria and provide very good sound imo.

I'd suggest Rotosound Swing Bass 66.
