I've never ventured into Flats before, but I'm starting to get curious. I would use them specifically on my Jazz, and I'm looking for a very warm and mellow type of tone.

fender 9050m, they won't give you a modern growl though

My first set of flat are sold by webstrings.com; if you want a taste of the flatwound sound, try 'em at $15 shipped. They are warm and mellow.

TI Jazz Flats are really good too. You need to allow a couple of days break in, they seem kinda sticky at first.... then even out!!

If you want warm end mellow my vote goes for TIs. If you like to keep it a bit crisp and lively I'd go with Daddario chromes.

I don't want to drop all that cash on TI flats when I'm not even sure if I'm going to like flats.

any other cheaper alternative that achieves a warm, mellow sound in the $20 range?

Another vote for Webstrings.

They're way better than the price would lead you to believe.

Not to long ago I bought a bunch of flats to test out and compare. The most mellow I tried out were the Dean Markley Flats; by a long shot.

I also tested Chromes, Rotosounds, Laklands, and Fender.

From bright and punchy to warm and mellow I would rank them like this: Chromes, Lakland, Rotosound, Fender, Dean Markley.

I'm currently using the Chromes. I find them to work best with my P-Bass in a live setting. They have more going on in the mids and seem to cut through the mix a bit better than the rest. After a few week they lose a bit of their brightness, but they still sound fantastice to me.

If I was recording and trying to get a thumpy, buttery, old-school R&B tone (think Jamerson) I used the Dean Markleys. Fenders come close, but not as mellow as the DM's. I found that the DM's don't work well live; at least with a P-Bass. You might have different results on a J-Bass.

I have been using roto 77s exclusively for a while now, and I loves 'em! Not super mellow if that is what you are looking for, but they sound great, and the B is the tightest I've ever had.

+1 on the roto's 77. They are amazing but the sound goes off quite quickly to give you a less irritating sound which is mellow! Unless you wash them in denatured alcohol (DONT BOIL STRINGS) and then the sound comes back every time until the string wares away!

The Chromes get there after about a month and stay there forever. I had a set on my SR5 for two years. I only took them off because I was feelin it for rounds again. Fantastic string. Be patient grasshopper...

I like Chrome XL's, mostly because they're what I can find in stock locally.
They take a bit to settle in, but they're silky smooth after an hour or three of playing, and stay that way for years.
