Help a guitar player out, just bought a used Bongo 5 - what strings do you recommend? I play mostly funk, rock, and jazz. Some fingerstyle, some slap.

What kind of sound are you looking for???

Go with Ernie ball Slinkies in the 45-130 gauge if you want to be conservative.

Lo Riders in the lighter gage, .125 B string size You'll still have plenty of low end punch with that pre-amp!!

EB Slinky in Stainless or Nickel Plated Steel?

I have an SR5/HH that will arrive in September, and like the OP, I'm also curious what works really well on MM to produce the 'Ray tone, and a good J tone from the HH pickups.

I would say Slinkies as well although I used rotosounds on an SR5 I had and it sounded ace
