Recommendation for new strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I just broke a string, so it seems it is time for a new set of strings. I was using DR Low Riders, they were cool. I have only really tried those and some Ernie Ball slinky's. I play on a 5 string Stringray and am looking for a nice set of strings to compliment my bass playing. I play in an alternative rock band, I like to slap my bass, I play finger style, I like to get funky, play nice melodic lines or anything in between that really. I'm just looking for some recommendations on some new strings. The DR's are freakin expensive but I don't mind paying the money if it is worth it. Any suggestions? Thank you all

How did you like the Ernie Ball slinky's? I find them esp good for basses that are a little lacking in crunch. GHS on the other hand to me doesnt change the crunch factor and instead just gives solid qaulity sound. Rotosound adds a touch of metallic clank and is the least bright stainless strings Ive ever tried. More like nickel strings in that regard. The time I tried DR low ridfers I thought them dull and uninspiring to me. Daddario another string I dont like was ok for cutting crunch factor some and giving a mellowerr smoother voice then GHS, Erniw Ball, & Rotosound. Dean Markley blue steel would be worth concidering if you want lotsa high end content but retaining solid crack of thunder lows.

I've been using Ken Smith strings on my 'Rays for some time with great success. I've had their stainless rounds on my fretted and nickel grounds on my fretless 'Ray and both have worked out well.

I use DA XL Nickels and Prosteels. Currently strung up with Prosteels and I love it.

I like DR Nickel-Plated Lo Riders, and Skjold strings are pretty nice too.

I recently purchased a set of Fender 7250s on sale at MF, and I'm diggin' them.

The Perfect Bass also has good prices on the D'Addario XL Twin Packs of strings, and you can save an extra 20% right now using the "gonefishin" discount code.

Dunlop's headed up by a former DR guy, supposed to be a really good inexpensive alternative to DRs. I've been meaning to give them a try, but just never gotten around to it.

Yeah, I ordered the Nickel coated Dunlops 40/120. Thanks all for your suggestions, I'll let you know how I like these strings.
