I did this a while back... it was also to show the sound of the Kent Armstrong humbucker soapbars I had custom made by him.
It shows a decent comparison between Elixir's, SIT Power Steels and SIT Power Nickels. Though the Power Nickels had a bit of playing on them so had tones down some.
SIT PowerSteels vs PowerNickels vs Elixirs w/ soundclips
What was most surprising to me was how similar the Elixir's sounded to the SIT Power Steels when recorded. There's an obvious warmth difference with the Nickels as expected, but the difference between the Elixir's and Power Steels is slight. The Power Steels have a bit more fullness to them and such, but live no one would ever know.
Regarless, for the difference I price I now just keep SIT Power Steels on my Humbucker bass as they're $18-19 a 5-string set and last a good decent life. I'm currently using SIT Silencers (Nickel) on my J/MM bass which I keep more vintage sounding, but am only on my first set of them. I'll stay with them, or try Power Nickels on it and go with whichever I like best.
