Reslotting the nut for big flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a new Lakland DJ5 and I'm trying to find the perfect flats for it...seems to be much harder in 5-string than it is in the 4 string world

That bass comes with a .128 low B, and it seems to be a fairly tight fit in the nut.

I put a .130 flatwound B in there, and it felt quite snug.

The next set I want to try comes with a .132 B. Am I going to have a problem using a string that big in the existing slot?

I don't mind getting the nut filed out, but I don't want to do that until I'm convinced the new flats are THE strings I will live with for a while.

Any thoughts?

Try emailing Lakland. They may be willing to send you a spare nut filed to the gauges you desire. I hear from Lakland players that their support is unbelievably friendly and fantastic to deal with.

That way, when you want to experiment, just unglue the nut and reglue on the one for the gauges you want to use.

+1 on what he said... always try to keep the original nut so you can go back to it...
