Restringing a Spector 5-string

Sign in to disble this ad
I wonder if any of you have solved this problem before....

I have a Spector NS 95 that I want to restring. The instrument has a 34" scale and long strings are recommended for that scale by all the manufacturers. The length of the 5th string is a problem. The strings are tapered at the peg end, but the distance between the nut and the peg is so short (1.75") that the untapered part winds onto the peg. Its too sharp a bend for a 0.130 B string and it breaks.

Will a string for a 32" scale bass work here? Are they even made in that guage? What if I unwrap a few turns at the top to lengthen the taper?

The people at Spector were nice, but they never heard of this problem. Surely I'm not the first guy to wonder about this?
