Ric String Gauge Question.

Sign in to disble this ad
I was at Rudy's Music Store, in NYC, yesterday buying strings for my ric 4003. While I was buying them the sales guy gave me a tip that on Ric's I should avoid a gauge that goes above .105 on the E string and .045 on the G string. He said that because Ric's have low tension necks anything greater would then that could bow the neck. Has anyone ever heard this? It makes sense, but at the same time seems a little off to me.

4003s can take anything, the 4001s need supervision.

I agree it is big, but it is in no way uncommon.

its not about the gauge, its about the tension... but it doesn't really matter for a 4003 anyway. The guy was trying to give you a tip he thought he knew about ricks but the tip concerns 4001s.

Yea i had read that the 4003 was meant to correct the "problems" that plagued the 4001. But, still i wanted to hear others input.

there wasn't a problem with the 4001, what happened was that when peopled moved from the standard low tension flats to the popular rounds the tension was much higher so they would be forced to adjust the truss rods but they didnt' know how to do it properly resulting in damage... so the rule of thumb was "DONT DO ANYTHING TO 4001s THAT COULD CAUSE THAT" rather than "here is how to adjust the rods properly".
