RMCs and roundwound strings....

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a Conklin 6 with an RMC piezo bridge and the stock Conklin Snakeskin strings, which feature the taper core. They have a nice bright sound and I'm going to stick with them on this bass. I'd like to entertain the idea of a 7 string with a piezo with nickel wound strings instead of stainless steel.

Do I really need the taper core for them to work with the piezo systems out there?

No.... my own Conklin is currently strung with regular roundwound strings for five of the nine strings and they sound just as good as the two exposed core strings and the two plain steel strings. If you swap between exposed and not exposed core strings you'll probably have to re-adjust the string height and intonation though........

But congratulations on the new Conklin! It's gorgeous!

Well...good to know in the future. I'd be fine on the higher strings, but it doesn't look like my saddles can be very low on the B and E strings without the taper core.

I'm not upset with the tone, but it's a tad brighter than I'd want. Fortunately, they should dull a bit as they break in.

I'm thinking the search for a 6 string nickel set for a 35" scale bass might be a lot of work, eh?

If you're not afraid of low-tension, check out Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Rounds. That's what I've got on 3 of my basses, including my Stambaugh 6-string with RMC piezo pickups in the bridge. Especially with the tone knob down a little bit. mmm...delicious

Are they long enough for 35" scale basses?

Yep. The standard length is 34", but they're just long enough to fit 35" fine. There's a 36" length set available too if you need them longer. I think Juststrings.com has them...
