Rotos for sure. DR's aren't even in the running as far as I'm concerned. Second choice would be Blue Steels.

Rotos. If you like the round wound sound, the Rotos are king. They have the brightest, most in-your-face round growl of any string I've ever played.

What do you want your bass to sound like?

Hi Beams are much more refined and longer lasting. But, if you like the grainy, rough-around-the-edges sound of the Rotos, nothing else will do.

Rotos for me. I was never really impressed with the DR range. If I need a roundwound sound I often go for the swing bass range or the PSD 99 set.

Nothing else.

I like DR's, but not Hi-beams (too loose). I use SS Lo-Riders and love them. That being said, I will agree with the other posters that if you want the RotoSound "sound", then nothing else will do.

I have Dr Sunbeams on my 72 PBass and Roto 66 on my 70's mod jazz. They are exactly the tone I'm looking for on both. Just my two cents.

Depends... I used to love rotos on my jazz bass, but they were no good on a MM stingray, didn't get that stingray tone. The Ernie Ball strings were best for that.

Between those Id pick Rotos. Between rotos and neons though its about even though neons have tad more low bass articulation while rotos have a tad bit more solid heavy womp like effect. I do want to try fatbeams. Sunbeams are a bit more hifi in a way then either in their warmer tone like way. But neons and rotos are my top picks with neons my number one now.

For aggressive rock sound definitely Rotos. I tried Hi-Beams on a few occasions and I just hate their sound. If you want something close to the Rotos that will last longer and be easier on your frets then go for La Bella Steels (formerly known as Hard Rockin' Steel). A little more refined than Rotos but still have the growl and grunt.
