Roto 77's vs. Chromes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I'm a Thrash metal player, and I'm looking for a set of flats that are really bright, and good for slap too. I currently use Roto 77's, but have heard a lot of good things about the chromes. I just ordered a pair, but they won't be here for a few days.
So in the mean time, I was wondering if anyone had tried out both sets, and could offer their thoughts?
Thanks!

IME chromes are about a billion times better for slapping than rotos. Smoother too.

agree with this, but the rotos are brighter sounding, higher tension too. I prefer the rotos, but the chromes are great strings too.

Good luck!

Its a matter of taste. I like em both, but prefer the rotos. One thing i dont like about the chromes is the thin E string. 050 - 105 does not make sense to me.

??? I have both on different Fenders, The Chromes have the most tension of any flatwound, more than their roundwounds, and way brighter then the Rotos. The Roto's will thump better. IMO

I found the chromes to be about the same tension as regular xls the rotos felt very stiff to me. Dont get me wrong I really came to love the 77's just not for slapping. They do thump alot better than chromes but they just felt to tight to comfortaby slap for me. It seems no matter how many of us try the same string, we will all have a differnt experience with them.

Someone post the "heres to fail" picture, that is not true at all.

Not wanting to be unhelpful to the OP, but I honestly think rounds may suit better, even the brightest flats arent going to be really bright. And slap on flats is an acquired taste (it wont sound like rounds). The Rotos are about the brightest I have tried, Chromes better of slap (but still not great IMO).

Thanks for the suggestion Meatrus, but I can honestly say that I'll never be going back to roundwounds (or at least not for a long time). I've only been playing with flats for about 2 months, and the difference is amazing. I love the feel and sound of flats so much more than rounds. There's no competition.

I started with roto's and I've achieved a most amazing tone. It's ah-some. The slap is great too! But I've just been wondering lately about the chromes, because they seemed to be the biggest competitor with roto's when I was first trying to decide. I know it's all a matter trying them out myself, that's why I ordered a pair. But since I'm still waiting for them to come in, I thought I'd ask my fellow tb'ers for their opinions. And so far, I like what I'm hearing about 'em. Thanks so much for the help everyone!

Not at all unless you mean the Jamersons. Equivalent Fenders and Rotos are significantly higher tension than the Chromes.

Roto does not give the specs for their strings so I am going off of feel. On my Fenders the Chromes feel tighter and are much brighter. The Rotos are almost floppy, but have a nice thump. They still have problems with dead strings too. The E string went dead on one set I had after a month of sitting. There are threads about this, but they are old. I got a bad set.
