Roto Nylons on Fender Jazz question

Sign in to disble this ad
Happy Holidays,

last night I put a set of those nice black nylon strings on my Fender Jazz (an xmas present) and found the tunning to sound off. Individual notes almost have a chorus like effect on them, especially the lower ones, and I'm finding it hard to tune the thing. The higher notes become much clearer and anything past the 12th fret sounds good and in tune but the lower I get the harder it is to get the tuning to sound right. Anyone ever heard of that before?

Have you tried setting it up for that gauge of string? Sounds like you need to adjust intonation as well as check your nut.

The chorus-like effect can be caused by a twist in the string - I had one recently - I fixed it by loosening off the string completelyand taking it off the post. The end of the string stuck straight up in the air, so by turning it round 90 degrees at the bridge, I got it right. On re-tensioning, there was no chorus-like sound.

Thanks for the help. There didn't appear to be be any twists in the strings but my intonation was off, which I fixed and that cleared up the some of the issues I was having but those lower notes still don't sound perfect. Even my various tuners have trouble pinpointing which note is being played. I'm not sure if thats just the sound of nylon or not. You can't really hear it when its recorded in a mix, but i can hear it when im just practicing or writing stuff. Love the overall sound of the nylon though.
