Rotos- Nickel?

Regarding RotoSound Swingbass 66, no one mentions their Nickel version. Are those pretty much like the red headed step child that bears little resemblance to its more noteworthy Stainless Steel forefather?

I think they sound a little warmer and less bright than the SS version. Have used them a few times, but to me they seem sort of sticky and stiff. I may give them another shot in the future though. Might be worth a shot for you to give them a try.

Like maiden said, they are warmer then the stainless steels sound wise. The stainless roto swing 66 are the least bright stainless strings I know of, they have a brilliance to them but not in a trebly way like most stainless strings if that makes any sense. I used roto swing 66 allmost exclusively from the mid 70's to several months ago. The nickel strings are ok but a bit dull sounding to me. Most other mfg nickell strings are brighter sounding imo.

I only use the nickel version! Have them on all my basses that wear rounds.

The RS66LDN have blue silk, the RB45 are silk less but both sound the same!

They are pretty much a warmer version of the swing 66, the thing i really like about them is that they sound good even when old! IMO the swing 66 loose their thing really fast and then sound pretty bad, the nickel ones dont suffer from that problem!

They are also a bit softer on the fingers! Not as grindy and rough.

Lastly, the Swing 66 used to get my fingers black, the nickel ones dont!

I never have a problem with my Stainless Rotos sounding bad. They just break too often. I play them fairly hard, every single day. They break in a couple of months. It's really expensive, though, I wonder if I should start buying in bulk. :P

Hey Carlos,
I have recently fallen in love again with the nickel on steel swing 66 for the same reasons you wrote. They sound great even after the break-in time. I am really loving the great tone i get from them too!

Im using rotos nickel for the first time,... have you ever noticed a "fret eating" like the famous Stainles Steel? Because they feel a bit more rought than others nickels... more harsh on the fingers...

+1 to all of that. The nickels are also nicer for the frets.
I've the RS66LDN on my Geddy, I've tried the swing 66 steel, but I didn't like the feel that much. I like nickel plated strings most, and I usually use the EB slinkys which are brighter than the RS66LDN, but the RS66LDN are ballsier. BTW I found that the Marshal nickel plated strings are made by EB, and they look and sound just like the slinkys, but for 1/2 the price!
I also like the Fender nickel plated, but my favorite strings are the RS66LDN. BTW I didn't know that RB45 are the same as the RS66LDN, thanks for that comment! The RB45 are cheaper here compares to the RS66LDN.
