Rotos too long for P-bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Last night I put a brand new set of Roto77s on my Squier CV Precision, and I noticed that while the A, D, and G strings all tapered right after the nut like they should, my E string extends all the way to the tuning peg - there is at least a half-turn of 'fat' string wrapped around the post, in addition to my normal three wraps (making for a bulky, ugly red silk mess).

Is it just the P-Bass design of a tuning peg very close to the nut that is doing this, or did I get a mutant E string from Rotosound? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thats bizzare. Both my basses untill just recent string change had Rotosound swing 66 on them. Their was about a half inch of tapered string part just before the tuning posts. Id of just done 2 and half or so winds for E string cause of its thickness. How far from the nut is the tuning peg. My E tuning pegs are about 2 and 3/8 inches from the nut measured along the string.

Mine does the same thing, but so did Fender 7250, DR Lo-Riders, and almost every other string I've used.

You need to pay close attention to scale (string length). My Gibson EB3 is short scale and the first time I strung it the E string snapped at the point where it bends coming off the tuning peg. Returning to the store that I bought the strings, I learned the colored part of the winding some how eased the tension and that part was to rap around machine head. Expensive lesson back then, Swing bass strings were about $40. At least now they are reasonable. Problem is now nobody carries the short scale. Easy to find on line though.

My bass is 35-inch scale, and I double checked the strings, they're for 35" basses.

Mine are the same on American P-Bass (E is too long I mean). Always's been like that.

Interestingly had a few packs that were shorter and didn't go all the way up on the peg, but they sounded awful. Straight from the pack they sounded like weeks old. I complained about it and Rotosound are sending me replacements. I wonder whether they will be long or short versions.

Perhaps that bit wound up on the peg is the secret of their tone.

A Squier CV Precision is a 34" scale bass. That could be the issue.

It's really no big deal unless you're anal about having everything juuuuust right. It won't affect the sound or anything. My strings are like that too. It could be because fender tuning pegs are slightly closer to the nut then other basses.

I guess they're just a little bit longer for 34" scale bass that have strings trough body option.
