Rotosound 77 Jazz Bass flats

I never tried these before, I had Chromes on my other bass, which I like a lot. These Rotosounds sound really bright to me. Has anyone else around here used them. Do they mellow with age or do they tend to stay really bright?

Yeah, I'm not really diggin' 'em all that much so far. I was hoping they'd sound better once they were broken in. I might spring for a set of TI flats. I hear a lot of good things about them. I want something with some more bottom, more thump.

You need GHS Precision flatwounds. Lots of old school thump! They're very smooth - maybe the smoothest of all and they're a good price.

An alternative is Labella 0760M 'Jamerson' flats; the original 1954 set. Very smooth, thumpy, but more $$. They're worth it.

I just read in the other GHS/TI thread that the GHS doesn't come in long scale. Other than that, it sounds like they might have fit the bill. The La Bella's are worth considering, though. How about the regular "Deep Talkin' Flats"? Ever try those?

I just lowered the action on my new bass and that made a world of difference. I've never done any kind of setup or adjustments before so I was a bit scared of it, but it was very easy. I like the strings much better now, but they still don't have that fundamental that I want to hear.

Yeah, deep fundamental is not really Roto 77's strong suit. They have tons of upper mids, even after the newness wears off. TI flats also have quite a lot of mids.

Your leaning toward the deep talkin' flats from LaBella is the way to go.

you want lows - labella flats
you want highs - not labella flats

flats only get better subjectively with time they do not change their sound characteristics.

Yep, I found those Roto 77's to be really bright as well. If I were a slapper who preferred flats over rounds, they would be my go-to string.

LOL...OK, since you went there... here is a very impromptu video of me slapping a Rickenbacker with a brand new set of Roto 77's on it. Sorry for the flubs but it was totally off the cuff just to check out the video capabilities of my new iPhone.

I tried the Roto's on my new P bass, strung through body. They seemed to go flat real quickly? Chromes seem to be holding up better. Maybe the Roto's don't mesh well w/ the through body stringing? Has any body else out there seen this?

I have TIs and La Bella 760FMs. TIs are really nice sounding stings, but they aren't really thumpy. I guess they can be with some eq. They are also super light tension strings. My go to strings are La Bella's. I tried the 760FL set first and I knew they were the strings for me. I went up to the 760FMs just for the tension. Don't know if I can handle the Jamerson set. 760FL's were still really thumpy.
