WARNING:
THE BELOW IS MY OPINION ONLY.
Now that we got that out of the way,
I've been using Fender Flats mostly... but I've tried Chromes and TI Flats as well.
I had two of my three P-Basses strung with Fenders, so I decided I wanted each to have a different tone.
I looked around this forum and decided maybe I should check Rotos. I knew they would be slightly more trebley, but I didn't mind the idea.
The first thing that happens to when I get them is notice that they aren't exactly smooth. Unlike the Fenders they produce more finger noise and aren't easy on the fingers.
Second, even though I tried to break them in (playing daily, band practice, and 2 gigs) for more than a month, I cannot get any good sound out of them. They also are very rough on my fingers.
I guess Rotos aren't my thing. I tried their Stainless Rounds and I didn't like them either.
Back to Fenders I guess! Cheers. |

I just stick with chromes and they just sound better as time goes on.

Much better than the Rotos 77 I put on my other bass last month. I ended up putting Vaseline on them cause they were so rough but they'll have to stay a while, they're not cheap.

So you might need to try a couple of other brands before you get back to Fenders.
I've just ordered a set of Sadowsky flats to give 'em a try, as I heard lots of good things about them.

Anyways,
Fenders give me that "thump" that I have in my head. TI's were too floppy (i like low action but also dig in).
Chromes were nice but didn't give me that "sound". I guess I got too used to one thing
Might try other brands but right now my cash situation doesn't allow me to try too many brands plus flats need time and time isn't something I have either hehe |

After about 3 months I put them on my Ibanez acoustic/electric bass with the Fishman pickup and it sounds amazing.
A lot of the sound depends on the bass and the pickups (and the amp).
I put LaBella Deep Talkin Flats on the Roadstar and they sound great to me on that bass.

They were also a little harsh on my frets! I expected that on the Roto 66's I put on my jazz bass (they are gone now too). I have tried 3 times with Rotosounds and I just can't get into them.
I will avoid being yet one more voice from the wilderness telling the OP to use Such and such flats....But I have since found 3 different manufacturers I like and 2 of those I will be using again.
If ya don't like em, don't use them.

I compared them to stiffer TI's, with more emphasys on low mids. As I said in another post, they have the same tension as my previous installed Hi-beams
