Okey dokey, so they're going to be brightish for about a week and then they settle in to a very consistent tone, right? Do they get really dead sounding or do they remain clear with less top end?

could not tell you. I haven't had a set last long enough.
Don't worry, they will send you a new set, and a new set and a new set until you get sick of it.

So, you've had bad luck with these strings?

Yes, they did not break the usual way. The ones I had, the end would pull out of the wrap at the ball end.

I did like the sound & feel but after two times of that happening I gave up and sold the third set with out opening the package.

I will say, I have NEVER had a problem with other Roto strings, just the 77's. Never a problem with the 88's or 66's

Hmmm... I've got a set coming in the mail today and I'm wondering if I should just mail them back and get something else.

It was a few years ago. They could have the problem fixed by now. I put a set of 88's on my Jazz and have had no problem & my son uses 66's with no problem.

I've been noodling with bass since 1963 and have almost always used flats. I've used RotoSound RS 77LD s exclusively since 2004. I play 60 - 80 shows a year, plus studio time, rehearsal time, practice time at home and a jam session here and there. My attack is medium to on the low end of aggressive. I play with my fingers. No picks. I've never had a string break. I replace them about every six months, but keep them clean between changes. When I replace them it's usually because I just think I should. I don't feel I sacrifice tone, brightness or dead sounds. I think I've got a couple of actively played basses going on 9 months between changes. They just settle in and I play them. I see no need to buy anything else.

Hope this helps.

How much of a difference is there between the "fresh out of the package" tone and the broken in tone?

There's a difference. I could never get them to go fully dead dead, but they do break in and go somewhat dead. I wasn't crazy about them, but YMMV.

I once bought a used G&L L2000 Tribute that had an older set of Rotosound Steve Harris flats on it and I remember liking the sound but I sold the bass somewhat shortly after that because I needed the cash.

I'm using them on my Squier CV Jazz Bass and have a gig tomorrow. They have been on the bass for two months and are 'broken' in. They seemed to lose that klacky brightness and get a warmer, punchier tone. I like the sound I'm getting from them. No idea how long they will last, but as long as they get through the gig tomorrow, I'm OK.
