Maple is gonna take damage faster than rosewood or ebony. Cosmetic grooving will show up fairly quickly, but I think it takes years before the damage affects playability. If you know how to apply epoxy then go for it. I hear its much harder and more involved than most people think. Also, on fretless you shouldn't bend perpendicular to the strings as you would on a fretted, but rather use proper fretless vibrato like on a cello. But it's like car tires. Your tires will wear down from use. Nothing you can do about it.
Having said all that, I'm no expert and most of this is based on what I've read on here. But I'm sure most people would agree.
