Rotosound Solo Bass 55 vs. D'addario half rounds..

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone who has used both these and have a comment?

Please, no "I hate those bla bla bla" I am not asking to hear a rant, I want an advice for purchase, ie. facts!

I am on an five stringers, so any thoughts about the B-string are most interesting as well.

Thanks!

i have only used these strings in the 4 string version, sorry, can't help you with the B string. however, night and day difference, imho, on these two strings. the 55's are pressurewounds and the half rounds are just that, but the feeling is way different. the 55's have a nice slick feel with less finger noise than rounds. the half rounds by D'adarrio feel gritty, sticky and stiff. i really tried to like the half rounds but in the end could not get used to that feeling. it was almost like trying to play a really low tension string (not that these are low tension) and finding you have to lighten you touch up significantly or else your plucking fingers are getting hung up on the strings. not sure if that makes sense. anyway, i do recall an old thread where several people found they just could not get used to the odd feeling of the D'addario half rounds. as far as pressurewounds go, the 55's and the GHS pressurewounds are favorites of mine and the edge goes to the nickle composition of the GHS pressurewounds...

Top notch information, thanks dude!

I think I will most probably get both of em, string my fretless with the 55's and my fretted with the halfs, then we'll se how tricks go.

Cheers!

After trying both sets, I find the half's actually appeal more to me.

The solo's are not really my stile, apparently I am not the roundwound kind of guy, I use flats on my fretless and now halfs on my fretted then and it feel LOTS better with the halfs than it did with the solo's.

Tension is miles better with the half's as well, the solo's felt quite a bit sloppy imho.
