Rotosound Steve Harris Flatwound Strings

Hi all

I have recently ordered a set of these strings and intend putting them on a Fender Amr Dlx Precision (the older model with the humbucker).

Due to the heavier gauge has anyone experienced problems fitting them into the nut. I am just curious because this is the first time I have ordered a heavier gauge of strings.

Thanks to all in advance

Stuart

That's one heavy set of strings, so more than the nut (won't be so much of a problem) the tension on the neck will be increased if you standard-tune them. Check the neck relief!

I case you didnt know the Roto 77 set are the exact same strings, only cheaper and without the West Ham colors. Lovely strings by the way.

Except they differ in gauge therefore there's an added stiffness to the S.H.'s. I've tried both but sticked to the '77 because of that (not so much their colours).

hmmm!!!

My neck at the moment is fairly straight. Are these strings gonna regularly bow the neck!!

That would depend on the neck mostly, but my Jazz-bass couldn't handle the weight as well as my Precision did (both 1-piece maple necks). Adjusting the truss-rod proved more difficult on one than the other (in fact, I got rid of them asap on the J.B.) Good luck!

You can get 77s in the same gauge set.

TS save money and get 77s instead of signatures if you want to save money. You can also get a lower gauge set as well.

The Nut definitely has to be cut unless it was setup for .110 gauge e string

I had no problem putting them on my '04 USA P. I loved their initial tone. Just like Steve's tone.

However, they lose zing very quickly (in a couple days). Granted, Steve's tech changes strings at every show. Rumor has it that Steve went through several sets of Roto flats when recording "The Rime of Ancient Mariner" to get that fresh tone throughout the entire song.

They lose zing after a while, but not at all as quick as rounds. And besides.. after the zing is gone they even sounds better.

I am really hesitant to cut or widen the nut to accomodate these strings but I will give them a try. I have heard great reports about the sound from these strings.

I hated mine, to be completely honest. They felt sticky and they played really slow. Plus the tension was throwing my StingRay's neck out of whack all the time. YMMV.

You don't need too. I've used .110's on a nut that wasn't cut for them and it was fine. I've even used .130 on the same nut, and it was fine, and now I'm back down to .100 and there is no noticable "damage" to the nut.

I think they are great, but that doesnt mean that you are going to like em. Thats internet. If you ask what people think of national socialism, someone will definitely answer that its great.

Another set I liked the look of was the Labella Jamerson set which are also heavy. Does anyone know if the tension on those would be the same or slightly different?
