Read the original post date, then deduct 12 years from your figure...

I think Roto did go through a period where QC suffered but I'm pretty sure the problems have been sorted for a good while, now.
I think so. There was an early post in this thread from circa year 2000, stating that the mighty Billy Sheehan, a Roto endorser had stopped using them for QC reasons. He's now back with them again, and as he's a man who only endorses company's than he feels are making quality products (see the many Ampeg -> Hartke stories), they must surely be doing something right now.

I just for the record love the sounds I get out of Rotosound 66 strings.

After a while using DR Neons and Lo Riders I'm back to SS Rotos exclusively as my rounds choice now, they just have an edge to their tone that I've not heard on other strings, a certain quality to the highs that is cutting and exciting without being too sparkly or glassy, and just the right amount of lows and low mids to balance it. On a P clean or with various amounts of distortion I get a massive range of tones and they can cut through or lay a cushiony bottom down equally well. Great classic rock strings and they even seem better polished now than before, the last two sets I bought seemed smoother than before.

They don't stay bright as long as DRs but the worn in sound is exquisite, if you don't need the new top end sound. The harmonics generated through a tube amp or my VT pedal sound so freaking good it's a joy to play these things.

I bought Roto 66 for Ray35. Low-B string was darker in color than the other strings right out of the packet. I didn't know what it meant but B string went dead very quickly. I guess the B string was bad from the beginning.

Never had a dead Roto. If I am not using those, I have Blue Steels on. Those are great strings too.
