Are Rotosound swing bass 66's nickel on steel

Sign in to disble this ad
Are the rotosound swing bass 66's nickel plated steel with the orange package with the lion, or just the ones that specifically say nickel on Steel. I'm wondering if GC sold me the wrong ones. The kid said they are all nickel plated. I have never used rotosound before.

In my experience GC employees don't know diddly about bass strings. Took 'em 15 minutes on the phone to find out if they had a set with a tapered B. Said they did. When I got there, they didn't.

There was a time ............................... when Rotosound Swingbass were the thing.

But that was a very long time ago. Now if you get 2 sets in a row that feel and sound the same, consider yourself lucky. They tear up frets and fingers, and the Nickel wound sets I tried are the same way, only a little worse. They go for cheap, and it's true what they say about getting what you pay for.

rotosound wrote back on my question:
no nickel or cobalt in the ss strings !
(and theyre smooth for ss strings imo. at least smoother than warwick black labels or pyramid)

The time is now and they are as good as ever. I've never had a QC issue with them, and every set sounds incredibly good to my ears.

If they are selling cheap I'd love to know where.

The old myth about Roto's tearing your frets its pretty much false in the present day. Back when they came about fret wire was primarily made of nickel which is softer than stainless (hence the fret wear) However today frets are primarily made of different alloys (including stainless steel!) which wear considerably better than the older nickel frets.

As above, I don't find them any worse than any other round-wound string on the frets. I've found it has more to do with the amount and style of playing that has changed. Lotta bending(grinding) going on. Got'em on my Bro's. Ric since '77 and yeah, there's fret wear, but it doesn't look alot worse for the years than players I know with far newer instruments, just harder and more playing. I just got a cheap bunch of them from a guy here on TalkBass-5 packs fer $75. If you see them at a good price grab 'em, they don't go bad.

anyone? i'm seeing 4 different nomenclatures for their nickels on their site, with differences being string guage and 4/5 string sets...is there any difference other than that? nickel plated steel? pure nickel outer wrap? here are the designators from the site:

SM 66N
RS 66LDN
RS 66LN
RS 665LDN

thanks!

Guitar Center employees are usually wannabes ... they want to be rock stars but have no talent and very little knowledge about what they sell ...

The 66's are either stainless (LION), or nickel-steel alloy, not plated steel to my knowledge. E-mail them, they were very responsive for me.

Well, the labeling on the box describes them as "pure nickel". That'd be the RS 66LN anyway - medium-light gauge four-string set.

In case anyone is interested in trying them out, I've got a couple sets for sale at a nice discount - first come, first served. Check 'em out:

FS: Two sets - Rotosound Swing Bass nickels

For what it's worth, the Fender SS strings are pretty smooth (unlike most SS strings).

I've been using Rotos for a very long time. I have tried a few others, DR , D Addario, Blue Steel and Boomers. I always come back to them so I'm a Rotosound buyer till the end I guess. I have never had any issues with there quality. They sound great and last a long time for me.

I remember back some years when playing fulltime and broke as hell, I could just boil a used set and bring em' right back to life. Those were the days.

Me too. I have used them for over 25 years. Tried others, always end up coming back to them.
