Sign in to disble this ad
I'm a big roundwound user on my fretless. Never tried rotos on it though. How do rotos sound on a fretless?
I also want to try out flatwounds on a fretless, how did those sound?
Remember Tommy wdju(what did jaco use)?
What did he use?
I'm a little upset with roto because on the website the sound preview on the swing bass 66 and the jazz bass 77 are the same. And I have already thought about how it could be the same riff and differnt strings, but I can hear the differnt sounds between roundwound and flatwound... I'm sure rotosound is great but I know flats and rounds can't sound the same. |

Why not go with DR Sunbeams? They are the best string I've ever heard for a fretless. They're nickel wrapped so they are a lot easier on the board. Plus, they are round core (very easy to play), and sound so delicious!

You can either say F@*! it and use em or find another type of string. I hate flatwound strings personally so I use black nylon tapewound strings on my fretless. Tone wise I'd put them between the two(roundwound/tapewound) not quite as mellow sounding but not as bright as roundwounds(plus no string talk)

The ones I use are the "Funk Masters" - gauge 30.

So like you said, I'm gunna say "just F@*! it" and go for it! Now the question is Swing 66,
Funkmaster, or change it up with the billy sheeehan (yes I know who he is) strings? |

I doubt anybody is really going to notice a whole lot of difference between a .045 and a .043 G string, plus I know a place that can get you the regular Rotosound Swing Bass for $15 a set. PM sent |

Have a hard epoxy finish put on the fingerboard... I've had that for 22 years; I only play roundwounds and the finish has not been worn thru...
Norik Renson of Renson Guitars in Studio City, CA did that for me and it plays amazingly well... FWIW |

Have a hard epoxy finish put on the fingerboard... | Yes, unless you fancy replacing necks on a regular basis, the epoxy finish is critical if you're going to use rounds on a fretless. Sounds like in this case, however, the damage may already be done? |

It's a Guild 5 string Fretless, with a EMG's and Bartolini preamp... Nathan East once said, after a band I was playing with opened for Fourplay, "I want that tone, I want that tone!" |

D'addario strings are gentle on fingerboards, in my experience. From what I hear about Rotos, they're not so kind. Haven't tried them yet.

But it's down to the Steve harris flats or the billy sheehan rounds...
or I could just get swing 66 or jazz 77's |
