Rotosounds (Just thought I'd share something)

Sign in to disble this ad
I used to work at a certain corporate music store, and I would get quite a few bass players asking for strings that would fit their 34" scale bass with string through bodies. At the time I didn't know the answer, but I recently discovered that the silk wrap on Rotosounds starts about an inch later than on most other manufacturers. This holds true for both their flatwounds and roundwounds.

Long story short, I found a set of flatwounds that actually fit on my Grabber. Just thought I'd share for anyone facing the same dilemma.

My Pilot has a 35" scale length, so Rotosound suit perfectly as I can get Extra Long sets, that are guaranteed to fit.

yeah i had d'addario flats on my Grabber, but the silk started in the middle of the first fret. it's always harder to find any variety in flats since companies dont make as many, luckily i found these

the overall winding length varies by string manufacturer...

The RS66LD which is their most popular set .045 .065 .080 .105 is marked to fit 32" - 34" instruments. However depending on the instruments bridge configuration, they still may fit 35"... Rotosound "Long Scale" strings have a 37" Ball to Silk winding length.

The Extra Long sets are marked to fit 33.5" to 36" instruments...Rotosound "Extra Long Scale" strings have a 39.25" Ball to Silk winding.

So in short... If you measure on your instrument from the ball end to the nut, subtract about 1" for the length of the ball end silk and it falls in either of those "Silk to Silk Winding Lengths", then those strings will fit your instrument.

Short Scale Rotosound: 30" Scale = 32.5" Ball to Silk
Medium Scale Rotosound: 30.5" - 32" Scale = 35.25" Ball to Silk

FWIW... GHS Silk to Silk winding length is 36.5" for Long Scale and 38" for its Long+

SIT is 37.25" winding length on the majority of their strings...

D'Addario Short fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is up to 32"
D'Addario Medium fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is 32" - 34"
D'Addario Long fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is 34" - 36"
D'Addario Super Long fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is 36" - 38"

ETC ETC...

If looking for a new set of strings and are unshure of the best fitment for your instrument, it is best to speak with a reseller that can help you find the best fitment for you.

Rotosounds don't fit through-body immediately on my bass, but they do after a week of being on there. I've had 2 sets so far (so yeah, I really don't know that much)

It all depends on the basses configuration, every through body is different... Every bass is different depending on configuration...

The best thing to do is take a felt tip marker and put a line just past the nut. Remove the string and measure from the ball end to that mark. Then you can find the best string length to fit your through body instrument.

I noticed this on my American Standard Precision when I strung through the body, but already had used Rotos since I started. That was just a plus.

Yes, Rotos like DR can fit string thru and regular top load 34 scale just fine.

+1 on DR.

Dunlops and Curt Mangans also fit pretty much anything as well.
