rotosounds sound weird

Sign in to disble this ad
i bought some new strings yesterday, and i asked the guy at the store for advice - i told him i had 3 requirements:
1. strings that were a bit gentler on my fingers
2. strings that have a decent, even tone
3. strings that don't sound so jangly and guitar-ish.

so he told me to buy a set of rotosound 66 (rs66ld swing bass) strings, which i did. i now unfortunately have a VERY jangly guitarish sound, and on close inspection the strings produce a lot of weird harmonics too which i find deeply annoying. they're certainly bright and tonally even, and they are gentler on the fingers, but it's really not the sound i was looking for. (not to mention the guy at the store and his attitude..."if its good enough for rockstars, its good enough for you"... what an *******.)
can anyone recommend any other strings that are closer to the sound i'm describing?
thanks in advance...

Sounds like GC... Roto Flats(RS77's) or maybe Fender flats (9050's) might have been the ticket. Nice, fairly bright for flats(both stainless), and very shmooth on the fingers.

+1 on the 77 Jazz flats. Great strings.

I love those Rotosounds, but the SS ones are one of the hardest on the fingers out there, and tonally when new they are one of the clankiest and jangliest, with tons of harmonic overtones. The guy who sold them to you should now better if he had even the slightest personal experience with them.

A nice set of nickel rounds, or nickel or SS flats would be much better for your requirements.

thanks for all the great advice, this is exactly what i needed to know. i should have asked here before going shopping. there's a lot of different strings out there and it's hard to know what's what. i read about nickel rounds and i actually asked him about them, but i guess he chose to ignore me. i do like the sound of the roto66's, and they're definately fun to play but it's just not what i had in mind..

(when the guy in the store is behaving like he's god's gift to bass, it really doesn't help...what is it about guys in guitar shops and their weird attitude?)

Was probably a guitar player.

SS Flats would definitely fit the bill. La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass Flats are my recommendation.
