I just did the same thing and switched from Sunbeams to SS Lo-Riders on my Lakland JO5. I’ve tried Nickel Lo-Riders on a 55-01 and dug them, so I was looking for the higher tension and brightness. Its only been a couple days, but I think the top end of the Sunbeams is a little more sparkly than the set of Lo-Riders I have. There’s a definite difference in the SS vs. Nickel going on elsewhere, but I was surprised.

I do think the Lo-Riders have more mids going on and the SS is a little “tacky” feeling, but not any more than any other steel string – and they’re smoothing out already just in a couple days.

I’m normally a nickel guy, but just wanted to see what what. I’ll play these till they die. I am liking the higher tension, but its not very noticeable. Although I did drop the string height to get it back to where it was with the Sunbeams.

This thread is helpful to me as I am looking for new strings to try on my Ric. I had recently ordered a killer deal on Daddarios but they were a heavier gauge than I normally use and the tension was way higher than I normally use.

So I am looking for something to get me some growl and have been reading about the DR's and want to try some but didnt know which to get. I used to use Rotos and never minded the abrasive feel, but the last year or so I have become sensitive to that so I would like something smoother feeling too. So I may try Sunbeams and see how it goes.

IMHO, the LO-Riders (Nickel medium with .125B is what I used) have more mids and are very even across the range, while the Sunbeams have just a tinch more highs.

Another vote for Nickel Plated Lo-Riders.
