Round Core confusion

I've never replaced the strings on my bass, but they were starting to bother me, so I got some DR Hi-Beams. The instructions on the box make it sound like these things are made from porcelain, and I'm finding them a little difficult to understand. I'm really not sure about this whole crimping process, so I would greatly appreciate any advice I can get on this.

Basically, you just need to make sure you crimp the string ("crease" it at a 90 degree angle) before cutting it. Otherwise, the outer wrap may start to come loose.

My HI-Beams used to come with a small slip with picture instructions...I can't really seem to find anything similar online, though.

Personally, I just make the crimp where I would normally, where I want the string to end, THEN cut the string around half an inch past the crimp and put it in the hole in the tuner. I've never had any problems.

I cut mine at least 3 1/2" to 4" longer plus the crimped section @ 3/4" to 1" long itself.
