Round or Hex core Nickels?

Sign in to disble this ad
I dig in quite a bit when I play and I know that I want medium-light guage nickel strings..

Would Round core or hex core strings be better for somebody who digs in a lot?

I play mostly hex core nickels now but I want to try round cores.. How much of a diffence will I notice?

My main concern is all the fret noise from digging in.. am I better off staying with the stiffer hex cores? or will the rounds be fine.. maybe even better?

Talking steel strings here (haven't tried hex in Nickel), I found that the round core stings "bounce" more, emphasizing the reason we tend to dig in. The hex cores seem more controlled overall, but if you're digging to get more growl, then try the round cores.

Overall, pretty close, but you will notice a difference. I'm saying this based off using DR Low Riders 45-105 and Fat Beams 45-105, so I think that's a very fair comparison.

Give the round cores a try. I tend to dig in, but love round cores. I'm using DR Sunbeams 40 60 80 100 which do bend a bit when I dig, but they tend to give more resistance with a pick.

A hex core at 40 - 100 is of course a little stiffer.

Since you prefer medium gauge, definitely give round core 45 105 a try.

The TI jazz rounds were too light for digging IMHO.

I think you are going to like the round core feel in a medium gauge.
