Apologies if this has been covered before. Many Warwick 5 string players will be aware that the string slots on the tail piece are too narrow to accommodate thicker gauge strings.
Now, I've only experimented with a couple of different sets so far. I really like DR Low Riders, but the .130 B sits too snug. Muted tone. I just fitted a set of La Bella Stainless Round Wounds (previously known as Hard Rockin' Steels). The .128 B is tapered and easily fits. Sounds great, rich and full. But the .105 E string is actually thicker at the ball end and doesn't fit. I crushed it with a set of pliers as best I could and got it in, but it's still too tight and the tone is muted
This seems ridiculous to me. How can a 105 not fit? I love these strings but now I need a replacement E string of some description.
1- Do Warwick offer a Tail piece with wider slots? Edit: I've just seen this on their website, but it appears to be sold with a bridge/tailpiece combination. I wonder if the tailpiece is sold separately? Alternatively - how about file the existing one down, is that a common solution?
2 - What strings are you other guys using that fit with no clearance issues? Can we get some sort of list going. I'm only interested in stainless/nickel rounds personally but feel free to add whatever.
