Which Rounds have low string noise?

It seems everytime I play a bass with rounds on it I get alot of unwanted noise. I have always played flats, but I would like to have one bass strung with rounds.

Let the rounds go "dead" sounding from age.

I hate to say this, but technique has a big role on how much string noise you're getting...

After a week or two I WISH I could get more string noise. I love a grindy tone and play with my fingers so I have to clean mine every night.

That said, they should die in a week or two, depending on the acidity level in your sweat and the dirt in your hand.

D'Addario XL's (nickel) aren't too bad for string noise, especially if they've been on for 2 or 3 weeks.

This is true, but no amount of technique can avoid the noise of string squeaks from changing positions.

Here's a tip: try a narrow (Q=3 or greater) bandwidth notch (-10db or more) at right around 2KHz. That region is where a lot of the "noise" from roundwounds is and a narrow cut can reduce that quite a bit while not affecting your definition very much.

Both DR's Lo-Riders nickel and Sunbeams would be good choice.

I just ordered some sumbeams, Ill report on the noise level when i get them.

On that note, how long does it usually take juststrings to ship?

I grew up with flats a million years ago and when I switched to rounds I had the same problem. After a while my technique cleaned up and it's not a problem anymore.

Having said that, try TI Superalloys. The windings seem smaller than on most rounds and that equals less noise. As someone else said, D'Addario nickels ain't bad either.

The good thing about D'Addario nickels is that after that month-or-so period, the string noise goes away but you still get a good amount of brightness. Mine have been on for half a year and they just never die!

Especially once they settle a little, esp LoRiders.

On my side (Canada), they generally ship the next day my order is placed and it gets here between 2-4 days depending on customs.

Since I've discovered them a few years ago, I've never bought strings from a music store again. They just can't beat the selection and prices.

Usually takes two or three days for them to ship my order. If the strings you ordered are backordered then they will send you a notice and you will have them in four to five days tops IME. As far as strings with low noise.... i use rotosound swing 66 pure nickels. They mellow very nicely and have longlife.

DR Low Riders Nickel
DR Sunbeams
Ken Smith Compressors

My fav. rounds.

The Low Riders take a little time to settle in.
The Smith Compressors are great.
Smooth, deep, right out of the box. good fretless string.
Just started using Sunbeams.
I like them a lot.
great all around set.

Besides choosing a good string and using good technique, be careful not to excessively boost the high frequencies with tone controls, EQ, or tweeter level controls. They can be a major cause of enhanced string noise. Unless you really need the extra snap for popping/slapping or pick style playing, you may be able attenuate the highs somewhat with virtually no negative impact on your overall bass tone, while lessening string noise.
