Rounds for my Precision

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for some rounds that would suit a P-bass (I've found flats I like, but I like swapping inbetween the 2 depending on the gig).

I just want them to sound big and fat, as a P-bass should, with as little string noise as possible (finger sliding noise, not fret noise, my technique has that under control).

What rounds have you got on your P?

Dean Markley Nickel Plated Blue steel are ones I use. BUt most rounds are going to pick up that finger noise. Try and turn down your tone and that should reduce some finger noise.

Try some nickel strings first - they will have a bit less string noise and will be less likely to force you to change your setup. I'd start with something cheaper to see what you like - GHS boomers or something. I've never like D'Addario or Dean Markley, myself.

I really dig TI powerbass nickels. Smooth and cook great on my 50's classic. I also like fenders 7150's and 7250's cheaper and good too.

DR Sunbeams are also a good choice.

Coated strings usually give less finger noise.

I'll go with Bassbully on this one. I have used both Fender 7150s and 7250s on mine and they were great.

I've always like GHS compressionwounds on my J bass. They don't have as much zing as rounds, but they are still pretty bright sounding. Also, the oval-shaped winding reduces finger noise

I like the 8250 superbass fender strings that most P-basses come stock with nowadays

I have La Bella Slappers and definately are the best rounds I've found for a P. Don't let the name fool you, they aren't bright. They are steel core and outer pure nickel wound giving you more fundamental, less zing highs, superb warmth and best string to string balance I've ever found for rounds, usually rounds have D and D string too bright, these don't.
I have them on my Fender Aerodyne P and on a stingray copy with basslines, and they sound superb. Also great durability, you'll have them for months.
You won't regret it!!

I have some $14 Tempo Medium-gauge Nickel rounds on my P that I bought today... So far so good. But I prefer D'Addario.

D'Addario XL series (I like the XL-165 which is 45/65/85/105) and the DR Sunbeams are both great nickle strings. I give the edge to the DR because I think the round core gives the string a bit more of a supple feel than hex-core strings.

But my favorite rounds on my Precision were (speaking in past-tense because she's been wearing a set of Lakland Joe Osborn flats for about five years now) DR Hi-Beams. Stainless on a rouind core.
