Rounds That Thump ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I play in a Blues band have been using Flatwounds most of the time but find myself missing the Roundwound feel. I am looking for some Nickel Plated Steel Rounds that sound thumpy. I don't expect to find a Roundwound set that sounds like Flats , I just want some of the Thump Flats get. Can anybody recomend a set ? Also , can I set my EQ to get that that "Thump" ? I have used the D'Addario XL Nickelwound Rounds in the past.

GHS Boomers. They break in quickly and they are thumpalicious.

Thomastic Super Alloy's are my fave. Great harmonic content, very rich sounding. They settle in fast and last a long time. Nice string feel and more body that any other round I've tried except for the TI Power Bass. Power bass are great but a little more stout than I care for.

For something half way there, GHS Brite Flats. Those are ground round to 'semi-flat'. Cheap, thumpy and yet a stylish bit of twang to them. I believe that string to be highly under-rated.

YMMV but yeah - you can dial in some thump with a mild scoop to your EQ. Mostly it;'s about adding a smidge of boxy and then taming the hi's to get rid of the twang.

Smith Compressors? SIT Silencers? Both of these are compression wound rounds.

DR Sunbeams (my personal favorite roundwound set) break in nicely - lots of warmth in the tone.

I'd also recommend these Fenders too: http://accessories.musiciansfriend.c...ngs?sku=101291

I had the short scale version of these on a SX Jazz shorty I owned a while back, and they really sounded great. LOTS of thump!

A lot of people will probably disagree with me but a dead set of EB Slinkys on a bass with the treble rolled off work great for me. Added bonus, they have a very elastic, springy quality that are fun to play and they're cheap.

I have a 2000 MIM Jazz that still has the factory rounds on it. It thumps pretty well. My recommendation: whatever rounds come from the Fender factory, but installed for at least 5 years.

Plan ahead now, and in 5 years you'll be all set!

My rotosounds that are 18 months old sound very thumpy. Just get some bacon fat and rub it up and down the strings, a lot of thud out of any roundwounds.

well lo-riders do have thump, and that zing, they kind of remind me of flat wounds with the highs of round wounds. I still have to get use to the feel,

Ernie Ball Slinkys, after they've been played on for about a week, dull down tremendously and will sound very similar to flat wounds. Plus, they're cheap... $17.00 for a set. They are nickel rounds.

I like the sound, and feel of Slinkys, but they want $25 or more where I live, if they had been $17.00 I would have gotten them. I have to admit i was surprised with the slinkys, if they had not come on the bass I would never had tried them.

+1 to the Slinkys. I have a .050-.135 set on my Squier Affinity Jazz V and they're great! I paid $22 IIRC. Nickel rounds=thump. Good luck!
