I searched before I posted this but didn't find anything, so...
My question is this: Which roundwound string keep that new zingy bite the longest?
I am currently using D'addario XL nickel 40-95's and they have a nice zing to them for the first few days but then lose it soon after.
Would using a heavier guage help?
Would using steel strings help with more zing?
I've been thinking about DR Hi-Rider Steels. Are those what I'm looking for?
Thanks,
Austin

| I cant answer that , however you say you are using nickels , switching to steel strings instead of nickel will make a big difference , steels will sound noticeably more zingy. A heavier gauge set of strings may help but my guess is that unless you go a good couple of gauges heavier it probably wont make that much difference |

I'll try out steels.
I think I'm gonna give DR steels a try.
Anyone have experience with them? Hi-Beams are the lower tension ones right? I play in drop D sometimes, will the low tension make the detuned strings sound bad?

IME I like the Sadowsky SS Black Label strings. They've always treated me right. DR High Beams are decent too. Really, if you make sure you keep your hands fairly clean before you play and take care of your bass when you're not playing it that will make a difference in string life. There are also products you can buy that will dissolve corrosion and residue from your strings, and then there's always soaking them overnight in denatured alcohol.

High Beams are round core if I'm not mistaken. The Sadowksy SS strings are hexcore and I believe the DR Low Riders are hexcore also. You might want to go to the DR website for more information.

The colour coated seem to stay the most like they were out of the box. Though what I heard though was a more broken in roundwound sound. Not like a fresh new pack, but one played two weeks.
