Roundwounds that sound a bit more like flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, all,

I'm looking for a set of rounds for a P/J I recently put together. Just so you know what sonic ballpark we're in, it's got a Duncan SPB-1 (Vintage P-bass) for the P-pickup, and a Duncan SJB-3 (Quarter Pounder) for the J-pickup.

I first strung it with Rotosounds 66's, and it was way too bright and clanky for my taste. Then I put a set of Chromes on it, and it's a lot closer to what I want -- but not quite. (Plus, I already have a P-bass with flats, so I'd like this one to be a little different).

What I'm looking for, basically, is a really thumpy, flattish-sounding roundwound. I'd like for the strings to have a touch of the growly, grindy kind of sound that rounds do so well, but not too much.

Any ideas for me? I've never tried Sunbeams, but from what I read, maybe they'd be the ticket?

Thanks!

I went from RS 66s to RS 77's and I am liking them so far. I wouldn't say they are thumpy, but in my opinion they do sound like a flattish round. I am not sure how they will sound when they are completely broken in, but so far so good.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your replies... reading the GHS Pressure Wound thread is making me think about a set of those, too. Hmmm....

GHS Pressurewounds WOULD be the way to go, probably more so than any other type of round I have used.

D'addario Half Rounds would sound in between a roundwound and would sound thumpy when they grow old...
also dead nickels would sound like flats but a bit clearer...
so for DR Sunbeams are my favorite nickel set next to Fender 7250

Again, thanks for the replies, everyone.

I stopped by the local GC yesterday, and picked up a set of Dunlop nickels, just to try them out. Given what John Wentzien and others here say about them, I figured they might be close to what I'm looking for. And they were cheap! (always a plus...).

So far, I'm impressed with them. They're still new, and so they're a little bright, but nowhere near as much so as the Rotos were on that bass. I think they'll mellow down into just what I'm looking for.

I'm still drawn to the idea of the GHS Pressure Wounds; I'll probably try a set of those on my fretless.

I wanted the same thing you did, and bought some Ken Smith Compressors.

I want no more.
