Question Sadowsky Bright Nickel = sloppy B

Sign in to disble this ad
I just put some brand new Sadowsky Bright Nickel strings on my RV5... I set the action (medium high) and checked intonation, all ok. Made sure to raise the action on the B as the Sadowsky B is slightly tapered.

Now when I play it the B string is flapping all over the fretboard making a really nasty buzzz. I never had this problem when I kept it strung with EB Slinkys, the B felt tight and never rattled around like this even when attacked hard.

I'd like to know are the Sadowsky BN's prone to being a "floppier" string than the EB's???

I find the Sadowsky B's to have very tight tension... both the Nickels that I played and the SS I currently have on my Modern.. resulting in a very tight B string tone and feel IME. It sounds like a set-up problem... probably need to raise the saddle some more if you are getting buzzes. Also, if you took all the strings off when you changed your strings, the neck could have moved a touch and might be 'too flat'.. might need a slight 'loosening' of the truss rod. When a neck has absolutely no relief, or not enough relief in it, that tends to impact the B string first IME.

The EBMM string is non-tapered, the sadowsky string is. You need to raise the saddle to compensate, and you'll need to set the intonation as well.

He already did that, and intonation would have nothing to do with the feel or tone of the string. Every bone in my body says that the neck moved a touch during string change... easily fixed

Oh --- my bad, should have read a bit more closely.

I do think that the EBMM .130 is a little stiffer than the sadowsky nickel, but you're right, likely a small setup change.

+1... I had to read it twice, since I immediately thought of the taper vs. not.
