Sadowsky Flats vs Rotosound vs Chromes?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm trying to figure out which flat set to try on my Warwick. Chromes aren't bad but I don't like the G string that comes with the majority of sets. I'd like to compare the Sadowsky flats vs the Rotosound Jazz monel flats in terms of brightness and string tension. The brighter the better and the more tension the better. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion or had a chance to try both.

I've tried RS flats and didn't care for them, although I admit I didn't give them time to settle in. They might have gotten better, but I didn't feel like waiting. They had plenty of highs, and a "singing" quality to them, but I didn't hear deep thump which I wanted. Maybe it would develop later but I threw on some others.

I am currently using Sadowsky flats on my Precision and it is so far exactly what I am looking for. Depth, definition, and a nice thump. Similar to Labella flats. I didn't like the Sadowsky flats as much on a jazz as I do on the P.

I have been using the rotosound steve harris set, i LOVED them on my p until I recorded myself, running a line6 tone port and ampeg svx software,

Its just all clank.

as far as chromes go, I have heard alot of poeple complain about very weak G's until they get the 50-105 set.

I beleive there is a rule against saying things like this.

If rotosounds are so useless then how come so many people still use them?

I admit to not having tried many other flats, but I swear by the Rotosound 77's on my 6er.

There should be a disclaimer on Rotosound Flats. They are NOT thump machines by any means. Think of the name... Jazz flats. They're meant for playing jazz and to get your electric to sound like an upright bass. Rotosound flats make for very smooth and fast bass lines.
I've recorded with mellowed Rotosound flats and people swore I was using a fretless. Nope. Just a fretted P-bass.

I haven't played Sadowsky flats, but I've played the Chromes. Not a fan. I think that the G string that comes with the Chromes doesn't sound like it belongs in the set (different tonal qualities)

Those Sadowskys sound like they're worth a try.

However, I find Rotosounds to be quite useful! Been using them for several years now -- last really long, play really smooth, sound really loud...on my Yamaha TRB 5.

The B string could use a little more depth and definition...it's always the first one to die -- after about 3 months of steady gigs.

I do have to say I got 100 gigs out of a set in 2006 before the G broke -- this was on a loud blues/rock gig -- and we played & played.

The Rotos get my vote.
