Sadowsky Strings for 6-string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a set of nickel Carvin strings on my Lakland JO that I really like the tone and feel of (though the B is really dead). I also had a set of Sadowsky steel strings on a Lakland DJ I used to have that had one of the best sounding B-strings I've played.

So, I want to morph the two into a 6-string set for my Stambaugh. Am I right the LaBella makes both the Carvin and Sadowsky strings? If so, do you think my best bet would be to get a 6-string LaBella set?

Sadowsky strings are stiff and the highes are quite in your face. La Bella Hard Rockin Steels are pretty flexible and the highes are a bit smoother. Overall I think the La Bellas are a better all purpose string. I have heard some claim the Carvins are the same as light gauge La Bellas but I do not know first hand. I have also heard people complain about Carvin B strings which would lead me to believe the Carvin strings are not the same as Hard Rockin Steels. The HRS 128 tapered B string is a great string.

Here's a place with good prices and service and sell the single C strings.

That's the one thing I didn't like about the Sadowsky strings, they were really stiff. Do the HRS strings have a round core?

Sadowskys are made by R.Cocco. I've been looking for a retailer that sells them because I want a light guage 5 string set for 35" scale ... let me know if you find one!

Hard rockin steels are very flexible. I love them and the have a great B. The tone is more of a low-mid growl, really different than any other string I've played.

LaBella super steps are different, closer to a Dean Markley SR2000 in tone, but much more responsive and flexible. Its a cool set, all taper core. You might really like these.

I may be wrong but by looking at the sadowsky.com store it looks like they only make one guage (45-65-85-105-130T) for 35" scale basses. You can get stainless, nickels or flatwound.

Have you ever had a lighter guage of those?

Thats the problem. I want the lighter gauge strings, but roger only offers them in 34" scale.

When I said "them" I meant R. Cocco ...

I think the medium set would be too high tension on my 55-94.

Ok, I think I've decided and will be buying a 6-string LaBella HRS set soon. Is it just the B-string that's tapered, or is the E also tapered? Do I really need to get an 'extra-long' set for 35" scale?

I thought about the Super-Steps as well, and I'll probably try a set eventually. I do like the idea of them being real flexible, but I'm not sure if the exposed core would work well with the piezo pickups in my bridge, since there wouldn't be as much mass up against the piezos.

B&E are tapered. The regular length set fits my 55-94, but just barely.

Awesome. Got a 6-string set on order for my Stambaugh. I'll probably get a 5-string set for my Ken Lawrence too, if I end up liking them enough

They're good strings, I hope you like 'em. Very unique mid-texture.

Bringing it back to the dead. I want a similar sound and feel you do.
How did you like them?

You should try them. MIGht give you what you want. Might not. I was wondering because I'm trying to understand your preference so I know what you're trying to get out of the HRS strings...
