what strings get good slap tone but don't damage a sensitive fretboard?

I'll assume you a play a fretless because.. if you had a fretted there would be no worry about fretboardamage as it hits the Frets, I would go with flatwound strings.

I always use nickel rounds on my fretless basses.

Still plenty of "mwwaaarrhh", but they don't seem to cut in as brutally as s/s.

Makes sense really, when you compare the different "feel" of the two against your plucking fingers (nickels always feel "softer/smoother" than s/s).

If you don't want to lose the bright sound but don't want to eat your fretboard with rounds get Pressure wounds. GHS and Rotosound make them as well as a few others I can't remember right now. I use GHS pressure wounds on all 15 of my basses I love the sound and the smooth feel .

Rotosound Jazz flats, they're a bit stiff till you break them in.

They're very very bright! Once they break in they had more mid-rangey goodness than most know what to do with.

how about d'addario exl nickelwounds. theyre pretty bright sounding, good for slap, and last a long time.
