Scale length question..

Sign in to disble this ad
I see a little bit below me there is a question similar to mine, but I'll bring up my situation anyhow. I have a Modulus Q6 which is a super long scale bass. Yesterday I broke the high C string. Amazingly enough I found a store around me that not only has single bass strings but they have a C string. The problem is it is long scale. Would it really be a problem putting this on my bass? The string post for the C string is situated closest to the nut on a Modulus bass so it wouldn't even have to reach as far as say the A or D strings which are at the top of the headstock.

I can of course order one that is the proper scale online, but then I won't have it in time for my gig tomorrow. Not only that, it's a 4 dollar string with 6 dollar shipping (juststrings.com). Since this is the C string I'm hoping it won't be much of a problem..but I don't want to throw my bass out of whack either.

nope, shouldnt be a problem, it would be however if it were say your b string, due to the taper wound core.

Cool, thanks. Hopefully I never snap a B string! That would take some mighty force.

Related to this question, I have always found myself limited by the strings I can get for a super long scale 6 string bass. I've always just wondered about getting a 4 string long scale set and just getting the top and bottom string individually. Yeah, there might be a bit of a difference in sound, but the low B and C string are areas that I don't tread upon very often. 80-90% of my playing is probably done on the middle 4. For example, I want some DR strings but I don't believe they make super longs. For super long scale basses there seems to be little out there to choose from.

I have a Q4 and have run all sorts of ordinary 'long' scale strings without issues. Sometimes you'll run across a string that's short enough to have the silk wrap(if wrapped) end up in the nut, but not usually.
