Set for drop C...

I'm starting to think about a CGCF tuning on my bass for fun... I'm guessing 120-90-70-50 would be good gauges? I've always had 5 before, but the loss of the my 5 and a lack of funds makes me want to just drop the bass a step and then go for a 5th in the bottom.

Because I don't want to lose the high 4th. I only lose 1 note on the high end doing drop C.

A few people on here are running .045 .065 .085 .120... There are of course many other options you can do... the .050 .070 .090 .120 would work as well, but would need some tweeking on the setup.. The A D G strings would be a little heavy... but would still work...

Not a bad guess at all. I use 50/70/90/110 for D standard, but a 115 would be better for D. 120/125 for C. Keep in mind you'll have to widen the E nut slot.

I think you'll like how a B string tuned up to C will sound. One good way to create a reasonably balanced tension set for drop C is to use a 5 string set and lose the E string, for example 130 85 65 45 or 125 80 65 45. B strings are usually floppy so tuning one up to C works well. The 130 and 85 will have roughly equal tension, as would a 125 and 80.

Or buy a purpose-designed 'drop tune' set from Circle K Strings (strings at equal tension): vStandard Drop-tuned 4 Strings

I hear this guy's strings are awesome...

John Voegele Custom Set .045 - .110 - Rotosound Swing Bass 66

Seriously, that's what I use in Drop C and I am SO happy with both the sound and the feel of this set.

Look for sets that are close to;

.130 .086 .065 .047
or
.124 .082 .061 .045

Good balance and good tension.

I'm using EB Power Slinkies on my P and Rotosound RS66LE strings on my Jazz. I prefer heavier strings. A .45-105 set dropped to D Standard seems too floppy to me.

As far as widening the nut, that shouldn't be an issue. The .125 might be a better choice for higher tension.

A .130 will give you similar tension to the rest of the .045 .065 .085 set - if there is one.
