Short Scale String question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Everyone,

Ok, on a complete impulse last night I picked up a used Slammer by Hammer Short Scale Bass because hey I wanted a new toy and for 60 bucks it was too cool not to.

So never having had a shortscale before, I was wondering about some recommended strings. Do I need to look into short scale strings or can I use regular scale. What advantage or disadvantage is there either way?

I generally used long scale since there is more selection. But you have to make sure that the string will fit in the tuner. For flats, I tended to go down a gauge. For example, I would use 100 chromes rather than 105.

If you have an old set of strings that you want to try... the best thing is to try it with those before you spend money

I don't know that bass, make sure it is short scale and not medium scale. Short scale is basically 30" and medium 32".

It would be better to go for a true short scale set and avoid possible troubles that could occur. You can get them in just about any string type or gauge if you know where to look.
Go to www.juststrings.com and go to the search engine, and type in short scale bass.
Also, D'Addario and GHS make the most wide selections. Fender and DR also make short scale sets.My favorites? GHS Pressurewounds and Precision Flats, and SIT Powerwounds.

If you wanna use rounds you'll probably end up with D'Addario XLs because they sound good on most basses and unlike most other short scale strings some stores actually stock them.
