Short scale string suggestions for SG Reissue

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys- just got my hands on a used SG Reissue. I'm used to playing Fender basses and not quite sure where the SG's tone shines as of this point. On top of that, I don't have any experience with shorter scale strings.

So I guess I have a two parter question, to try and get some feelers out here:

1. Can you guys give me some short scale string opinions (including feel and tone descriptions please)

2. For any SG players- what are your strings of choice and what about those (in your opinions) make them shine on an SG? In my experience thus far, I think this bass is going to suit me specifically in two ways; angry with a pick or thuddy with some palm muting- so maybe that will open it up for suggestions.

Thanks ahead for any input.

These are pretty nice. I used to put them on my Epiphone Rumblekat.

I used to have a 1968 EB-O that I strung with DR Highbeams and it sounded great. I don't remember if I bothered getting short scales; I think regular scale worked fine. Of course mine was one with the slotted, classical guitar type headstock, so it was kind of weird stringing it.

I really like the tone of Fender 5250XL strings. I just tried a set of D'Addario Nickel strings and thought they are terrible. I'm on Rotosound flats now, will report once I get more of a feel for them.

I use Chromes or Labella's. The LaBella 760FM .049-.0109 have the highest tension (I can pull off a drop D), the Chromes are a little brighter.
