Question Short scale strings for a Gibson SG Re-Issue Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
M'kay, I have done a search on this but haven't found anything.

I am about to aquire a Gibson SG Re-Issue Bass (woo hoo!) but I'm not sure how to string it. I've played Fender P's strung with Rotosound RS66LE's (50-110) for the last 20 years so I'm most comfortable with that kind of tension / feel.

I appreciate I'm going to loose some tension no matter what because of the Gibbo's 30" scale but can anyone recommend a string that might come close to the feel of stainless steel 50's on a Fender P?

I've looked at a few different brands but most seem to only do short scale strings in 40 guage, which might as well be guitar strings!

Thanks, fellow bass boys and girls...

These are the nicest I've found for my EB3... silky smooth and medium tension...

Keep in mind that they don't really need to be short-scale... 34" flats are fine, provided you wind them carefully. You don't have to have silk winding up around the posts.

I used Ernie Ball Regular Slinky rounds and D'Addario Chromes flats on my SG RI. Both sounded great. Totally different obviously, but great.

Dr Hi-beams makes a short scale set that can be purchased at Juststrings.com. I use them on my Gibson EBs.

Ta chaps, that's really helpful. I was slightly concerned about using regular scale strings and having the winding wrapping around the post but if it's not an issue I'll probably stick with my Rotosounds.

Thud, thud, thud. Can't wait to join Team Gibson!
