Short scale strings on a regular scale bass

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was near Sam Ash (about an hour away from my house) today and needed some strings so I stop in and grab some. He gets them from behind the counter and bags them so I didn't see the scale (kinda my fault). Get home, put the E string on and the wrap is down towards my second fret. I don't particularly want to drive an hour to take them back soon, so aside from looking stupid, is there anything I would need to worry about with these strings if I choose to use them?

You mean other than you have the silky part going through the nut and you can't really get a tone out of the first fret and the tension's all wrong?

No, I can't think of anything wrong with this.

Don't use them! I bought a bass from a friend that used some like that. It was absolutely terrible!

Take them back and tell them you were given the wrong scale set. If they refuse to, then you need to find some other store to get your supplies from.
