Short Scale TI Jazz Flat Question--Really Dead E String?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have recently put a set of TI JF324 flats on my short scale bass.

The E string is really different sounding; very thumpy and thuddy, not at all like the other three strings. It sounds good, but not like the other strings.

With other flats, you usually get the D or G strings that sound different, and they all even out, but here because they are TIs, I am afraid that the other strings will stay middy and growly, and the E will always be different.

Anyone with this set who can comment?

Dead thread walking!!

I just bought an Epi Allen Woody with flats on it. It's a great bass, but the E string is totally dead - I mean it just thuds on every fret lol!

Why would this be happening? Is the string diameter too fat for the nut slot so the string doesn't vibrate correctly?

I'm looking to get the strings even - transitioning from the higher strings to the low E is pretty jarring as it is lol! Previous owner said that he had rounds on it and the E sounded normal, but I do like the flats.

Any ideas?

The "dead E" sounds like the problem I encountered with a set of TI's I bought for my Hofner Club -- I tried to deal with it for about a month, then gave up and put the stock Hofner/Pyramid set back on. Big difference!

For long scale bass, my favorite flats are GHS Precision Flatwounds. For short scale, nothing I've tried beats Pyramid, at least to my ears. Your ears/amp/axe/room may tell you something different, but I think a switch to Pyramid set #640 would go a long way toward solving that "dead E" concern.

thanks! unfortunately I read this after I ordered a set of EB flats from JustStrings.com. I'll try those first and if they don't fly I'll try the pyramids.

I also need to try the untwisting thing..I know one thing, it's just not going work the way it is.
