These two sites offer the widest selection for shortscale strings, especially flatwounds.
For the old school sound, I'd go with the shortscale GHS Precision Flatwounds. D'Addario makes a couple of sets in their Half Round and Chromes lines that are cool. There are even tapewound flats made by Rotosound and LaBella. You can get just about any string type or gauge in shortscale if you look in the right places.

are you going for a vintage sound? if so i'd shell out the dough for some pyramid golds... they're $70-90 but they last forever, and are the quintisential sound of the 60s

Silver. Black's a close second though.

Come on now!! What sort of sound do you want?

Agree, but I like the ones with nylon coating. I have those on my Hofner 500/1. Talk about a warm, smooth sound.

I've used Rotosound Jazz Bass (flats) and Tru Bass (tape wound) on my '68 EB-3, and would recommend both.
