What kind of bass ?
What kind of pickups ?
What style of music ?

I actually find that can make a dramatic difference
in an appropriate choice.

I have been useing Fender 5250 XL strings for several years.
They are nickel plated steel roundwounds gauge
.040-.060-.075-.095
They are reasonably priced and last a long time.
They should give you a nice tone on your funk and alternative.
Of course reggae always sound better with flats though.
I have a 1973 musicmaster myself.
That stock pick-up is really weak.
It is actually a Stratocaster PUP.
If you want to turn your Musicmaster into a total
tone monster, you may consider doing what I did to
mine.
I added a single Dark Star PUP and put the stock PUP in a drawer.
Either way, those Fender strings will give you a real nice sound.
